Multiple Benefits of Prairie Buffers Field Day

Free!

Thursday, August 24
1:00- 3:30pm

*PLEASE NOTE THIS IS A RESCHEDULED DATE*

Planting native tall grass prairie as a buffer at the edge of farm fields can provide multiple services from improving water quality and soil health to providing resources for pollinators, birds, predators of pests, and other wildlife. Research from Iowa State University has demonstrated that prairie buffers can significantly reduce sediment and nutrient export as well as improving water infiltration. Come visit a working organic farm that has a recently established prairie buffer. This field day will cover establishment of prairie strips with emphasis on preparation, seeding, and first year maintenance.
Instructors: Organic Valley staff and John Delaney, VSN
